Abstract:

Navigating the Penal Code: From Arrest to Parole A Practical Guide for Portuguese Court Interpreters

This presentation offers an accessible, terminology-focused overview of the U.S. criminal justice process for Portuguese court interpreters preparing for certification. Participants will follow a criminal case from the moment of arrest through arraignment, pretrial proceedings, plea negotiations, trial, sentencing, and post-conviction relief, including probation and parole. At each stage, key legal terms and procedural concepts will be examined in both English and Brazilian Portuguese, with attention to false cognates, register differences, and terms with no direct equivalent. The session also includes targeted strategies for the oral certification exam, addressing common terminology pitfalls, sight translation challenges, and techniques for maintaining accuracy under pressure. Whether you are a candidate preparing for your first exam or an experienced interpreter seeking a structured review, this session will sharpen your command of criminal justice vocabulary and boost your confidence in the courtroom.
